U.S. Military Academy at West Point

The officer staff and experienced privates of Company A, Third Maine have in recent years become regular participants in a Civil War history program for junior and senior cadets at West Point. In November the men of the Third Maine joined reenactors from the 124th New York and Seventh New Jersey in providing drill and firing instruction for cadets in five history class sections over a two-day period. This experience provided modern U. S. Army officers-in-training with an introduction to life on the battlefield for their early 1860s counterparts. Following brief presentations on Civil War soldier life and rudimentary drill exercises, the cadet class sections squared off against each other for brief skirmishes across the soccer field near Trophy Point.
